Balayage or Foil? When & Why?
Hi babes!ππΌ hope everyone is doing well! π – let’s jump right in ππ»ββοΈπ¨ – I’m breaking down balayage / foiling – when to use which technique and why π keep reading for more . . . .
First things first! WHEN & WHY? – How we decide what technique to choose depends on the natural tone of the hair!
Golden Rule π
π If someone is a natural level 6 or Higher .. I use BALAYAGE. That way I can ensure I will receive enough lift painting π¨βοΈ
π If someone is a natural level 5 or Below .. I use FOILS. That way I can ensure I will receive enough lift from the foils in darker hair ππ»

Natural Level 7 – USED PRAVANA HIGH LIFT LIGHTENER + OLAPLEX AND PAINTING THICKER PANELS AROUND FACE AND CROWN OF HEAD. Leaving the underneath sheet of grow-out/ darkness to help peak through to create dimension β¨ Once shampooed – added in pieces of light painting around the hair line at the bowl βοΈ

Natural Level 5 – USED JOICO VERO LIGHTS 30 VOLUME + OLAPLEX = 20 VOLUME. Start in back section and take ” thicker weaves ” throughout entire head / while back – combing in between each weaved foil. Adding in same level of lightener to back – combed section β¨ Once shampooed – use demi – liquid to add in depth to your foils. I use 7NB + 6NB – to help give her ROOT the appearance of about 1 and 1/2 difference than her natural ( level 5 ) creating the illusion of a lighter root.

The ” ever so popular ” DROP βοΈ – 1B + 2-3 OUNCES OF CLEAR + DEV – you’re basically making an ” attack ” of blue / violet that helps create a light pale yellow tone. If used on high enough lift can help create a beautiful platinum tone – without looking too fake. Leave on 40 seconds at the most. Don’t walk away from it. Massage the shit all over the hairππππ

This is an excellent quick tip guide for those who are wondering how to get a “Balayage” look on different hair levels. You always need extra lifting power (foil) when dealing with level 5 or lower. The how-to is excellent explanation, and if anyone wants to delve in further on placement should consider his class!! High fives Lance! ππ½

Thanks a lot for this! Wish I could find a skilled hairdresser in Seattle whoβs versed on the elaborate techniques you describe. They all use a standard template where I have 80s Looking highlights in a foil that looks like it was put through a cop, and struggle to remove red tones. Iβm needing a real artist like you!
